Creative Practitioner – The Debate Room
Through the Lead Creative Schools Scheme with Arts Council of Wales I worked with a group of secondary school pupils to design a ‘Debate Room’. As lead facilitator I helped develop their ideas, and problem solved the challenges to make a functional, inspiring place for them to learn in. Through my knowledge of set design, I taught the class the importance of special design, displays and composition with space. As the children had a large part to play in designing and making, there was a great sense of ownership and pride once the room was finished.
The seating bank splits into three sections, enabling it to be moved to other parts of the room depending on the lesson. A jukebox has been installed with recordings from the students in English, Welsh and French. These recordings are used as part of their lessons as catalysts for debate and discussion.
